This novel is based on the true story of the author's magnificent aunt Henriette Deluzy-Desportes, a French governess who fell in adore with her employer Charles de Choiseul, Duke of Praslin When Duc de Praslin's wife was murdered, Henriette Deluzy-Desportes was implicated in the murder. .

This book was widely favored and re-printed several times in 1938. Look at that signature page in the beginning was made into a film starring Bette Davis as Henriette in 1940.
